"The Year In Creativity Blog" 2020 Edition

2020 was a dumpster fire! 🗑️ 🔥 But we made it through somehow. Some of us with more anxiety than others, but we’re here. Despite all the drama, I still managed

Hope & Haven Homestead Logo on leather.

5. Hope & Haven Homestead: My longtime friend, Bryce, came up to me earlier this year with a proposition to make a logo for his “homestead”, or small home/farm/property that he and his family use to raise their family, and various animals and food. They moved here a few years back and have always intended to create a place for all to participate in.

The vision of their property is to invite those less fortunate to come, experience farm life in a safe, Christian environment.

The logo they wanted made had to encompass the idea of growth, old and new. So through various phase of logo drafts, we came up with a final logo!

4. Cabinetry Ideas: I worked with someone I know through my day job to curate a video showing off one of their projects: Cabinetry Ideas is a kitchen and bath design studio based in Indianapolis. They specialize in custom kitchens and baths and excel in luxury laundry rooms, home offices, and bars. They have a team of professional and certified designers and have been blending quality craftsmanship and great designs that bring value to any residential remodel or new construction home needing cabinetry since 1999.

This was a fun change to try some different camera angles and work in a natural and artificially lit environment to create “glamour shots”.

3. 2020 Christmas Card: 2020 was a hard year to be happy. So when it came time to create our annual Christmas Card, we had to acknowledge what’s happened, but also keep it cute.

We leaned into the theme of masks, unfortunately. It was also the first time we incorporated moving elements into the card! I made it into a GIF.

Since 2007 a couple of old roommates and I have been producing our own Christmas card. It all began in 2007 when my two roommates and I moved in together. The house we rented had a very vintage feel, 1970's vintage. We decided to take advantage of this and hold a photo shoot. We decided we loved the photos from this shoot so much that we should use it as a "Family Christmas Card". So I took one of the images from that shoot and produced a Christmas card that we mailed to a lot of our friends and family using the name "The LaFargels" which was a combination of the three of our last names.

2. House flyover: In 2020 we decided to sell our house, crazy huh!?

The process of selling a house while looking for one to buy is not fun, especially during the restrictions of a pandemic. But despite all that, I managed to make a video! I have seen home walk-through videos before, and decided to do our own to try to boost the potential of a sale.

Selling a house involves a lot. House repairs, moving all your junk somewhere else so your house looks bland and livable, negotiations. But focusing on a small video walk-through was a fun reprieve from all the drama.

I quickly found when doing the video that I didn’t have a wide enough lens for filming inside, tight spaces… so I used my iPhone and set the lens to .5. This made our space look big and helped me show off everything. I also utilized my drone to show off the property, neighborhood and heights inside the house.

After 19 days on the market, and more drama, out house sold! We also found our “forever home” in the midst of all of that!

Honorable Mention: Ignite 2020 - the camp that wasn’t. In the midst 2020 the Eagle Church youth group began planning the 2020 Ignite Camp in late 2019. By early 2020 we solidified a few things, including a logo, the scripting of several social media commercials, a step-and-repeat banner, bracelets and stickers.

Everything was produced except for the stickers, because Ignite Camp 2020 was canceled.

I think the colors were sharp, the logo was solid and it could have been a neat visual used on all the elements including recap videos and “Station Night”, but alas, Ignite 2020 was just a fleeting dream. Thankfully Ignite 2021 was a GO. Read more.

1. Nelson Wedding: I chose this as my #1 project because in the midst of a pandemic, I traveled along with my wife and daughter to Clearwater, Florida, to film a wedding and take a small vacation despite all the drama the year brought.

The wedding of Myranda and Mitchell took place on the beach in St. Pete, FL. It wasn’t a big gathering, 50-70 people, but it was the perfect size! I setup my cameras and was able to capture some beautiful angles. Angles I’ve not been able to catch before because this was my first beach wedding! I also had the chance to operate my drone!

The reception took place on the Calypso Breeze, which took guests on a 2.5 hour boat ride around John’s Pass near Madeira Beach, FL. This was such a fun way to do a reception. The weather was lovely and the couple had a beautifully simplistic and high-energy reception.

After we docked, I couldn’t believe I was able to have so much fun capturing a wedding day. Let’s just say it was a nice scenery change from landlocked Indiana weddings.

It was fun to relive the day as I assembled their wedding assets, and a nice reminder of the fun my family and I were able to have in the midst of a pandemic. Read more.
